Quest Diagnostics laboratories have a “massive scale,” Davis said, explaining that the Clifton laboratory performs 90,000 diagnostics a night. “We all struggle with labor shortages right now,” Davis said, adding that current deficits include specialized labor, such as histotechnologists, cytotechnologists and microbiologists who run diagnostic labs. Sending tests to laboratories outside of hospitals could reduce out-of-pocket costs for patients and overcome workforce shortages, he explained. As hospitals buy more physician practices-and adapt to an increased demand to process clinical testing from those physicians in their labs-health systems have begun to outsource diagnostic work, said Jim Davis, CEO of Quest Diagnostics.
